USAF Major Christopher Callaghan, Thunderbird Pilot

Interviewed Friday, August 26, 2005 - Air National Guard 104th Fighter Wing facilities, Westfield MA.

Major Chris, what first inspired you to become a pilot?

"I grew up in an Air Force family - my dad flew fighters - and that's all I ever wanted to do."

Have you ever been afraid to do what you do?

"I've not been afraid, per se... I liken it to the feelings an athlete would have pre-game: wanting to win, a sense of getting ready for 'the big game'."

You look like an athlete yourself (Major Chris stands 6'3" and is obviously slim and fit). What do you do to stay fit to withstand the G-forces encountered in fighter jet flight?

"[My routine] is a blend of eating right and exercise. I lift weights, run, do crunches..."

What was your favorite snack as a kid? Carrots and broccoli?

(Major laughs) "No... Girl Scout cookies. Who doesn't like them, right?"

And your favorite food now? (Smiling) "The same."

I think anyone reading this could learn a great deal from you by hearing how you've met a personal challenge in your life. What's been the most difficult challenge you've had to overcome in your 33 years?

(Pauses reflectively) "In 2001 my dad passed away. He'd always been my motivation to fly. I looked within to gain a fresh outlook on my flying. Now I ask myself when faced with a challenge "what would dad have thought about this?"

Thank you, Major Chris, for sharing both your time and thoughts. One last question:

Do you have advice for any would-be PILOTS reading this?

(Smiling. Beaming really. He answers.) "Absolutely. Anyone who wants to fly and challenge themselves in this type of dynamic environment can. The recipe for success is the same regardless of what you want to do: start early in life and focus on your school academics and athletics. Learn to motivate your peers to work toward a common goal, and you will achieve your goal."
